GROUP OF 77
GENEVA

STATEMENT OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA AT THE 87TH SESSION OF THE WORKING PARTY ON THE PROGRAMME PLAN AND PROGRAMME PERFORMANCE
(Geneva, 26 January 2024)

Closing Statement

Thank you, Mr. President.

1. At this conclusion, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to You, Mr. President and Mr. Vice-President-cum-rapporteur for your heard work and steering our discussions with skills and dedication. Let me would also like to thank the Members of G77 and China, as well as colleagues from other Groups for their flexibilities and constructive engagement, which has enriched our deliberations.

2. My appreciation would also extend to Mr. Pedro Manuel Moreno, Deputy Secretary-General, for his closing remarks.

3. As we conclude, let us collectively reaffirm our commitment to the principles of multilateralism and the vital mandate of UNCTAD in fostering inclusive and sustainable development through the three pillars namely research and analytical work of the secretariat, the intergovernmental deliberative work for consensus-building, and technical cooperation. The importance of fostering collaboration on a global scale cannot be overstated.

4. The Group of 77 and China acknowledge the on-going budgetary constraints within the UN system; however, it is very difficult for some Members of the Group, particularly the francophone LDCs, to meaningfully engage in the discussions when documents and meetings are made in English ONLY. Acknowledging and addressing the diverse linguistic needs of our esteemed Members would be more supportive for inclusive participation of all Members to leave no one behind. Also, we urge Members to consider increasing their financial contributions, ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of UNCTAD in addressing our shared challenges and realizing its mandate.

5. Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our capable Secretariat team and interpreters for their invaluable assistance and devoted efforts in facilitating the success of the meeting.

Thank you, Mr. President.
