STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF UNIDO- DELIVERED BY THE CHAIRPERSON OF G77 AND CHINA/GENEVA CHAPTER, H.E. AMBASSADOR AND PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE OFFICE OF UNITED NATIONS AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS IN GENEVA, J. DELMER URBIZO (Geneva, 16 March 2007)

In my capacity as Chairman of the G77 and China, Geneva Chapter, it gives me great pleasure to address you on this occasion of the celebration of the commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of UNIDO.

The 40 years of UNIDO’s work has seen immense achievements obtained, thereby justifying its creation. These successes could not have been possible without the good collaboration between the Organization and Member States.

UNIDO is an Organization that has notably supported the industrial capacity needs of developing countries through several activities under its mandate, particularly technical cooperation and development of programs in productive areas in order to reduce poverty and generate employment.

G77 and China has maintained a close and strong working relationship with the Organization, participating in global Forums that UNIDO has organized in this City and elsewhere.

The developing countries have many challenges of different types; therefore, it is important for them to continue to collaborate effectively with relevant organizations such as UNIDO.

As President of G77 and China, Geneva Chapter, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the important work that UNIDO, is undertaking under the guidance of its Director General, Doctor Kandeh Yumkella. We are convinced that his role and leadership in working with all relevant stakeholders in the development process will continue to benefit developing countries.

I express to you, Mr. Director General, as Chairperson of G77 and China, Geneva Chapter, the assurances of my highest consideration, and I conclude with strong confidence that we will continue to work together in the future.

Thank you
