Meeting of the Ministers of Science and Technology of the Member States of the Group of 77
Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 3 September 2006
Presentation of the G77 Achievement Award to
Prof. Paolo Budinich

"First, I call Professor Paolo Budinich to the rostrum.

For more than 40 years, Professor Budinich has been the driving force behind the Trieste System. Together with the late Nobel Laureate, Abdus Salam of Pakistan, they established the Academy for Sciences in the developing world and other research centers that will now become the Consortium of Science, Technology and Innovation to be based in Trieste. Professor Budinich created the International Foundation for Progress and Freedom of Science as well as the International Secretariat for Science and Technology in Trieste. For all these years, Professor Budinich has been dedicated to strengthening the partnerships between the North and the South through scholarships and fellowships for scientists from the developing world. In other words, Professor Budinich who is now 90 years old is the grandfather and godfather of the science and technology link between the developed and the developing world.

I now call on Ambassador Kumalo to present Professor Budinich with another gift."

H.E Mosibudi Mangena, Minister of Science and Technology of South Africa and Chairman of the Meeting
