STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA BY H.E. AMBASSADOR AHMED HAMID, DELEGATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF SUDAN, AT THE CLOSING PLENARY OF THE 30TH SESSION OF THE SUBSIDIARY BODY FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVICE (SBSTA) (Bonn, Germany, 10 June 2009)

Madam Chair,

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

The Group reiterates its sincere appreciations to the Government of Germany and the climate change secretariat for the excellent arrangements made for this meeting.

Madam Chair,

The G-77 & China noted that the EGTT reports on financing options and a long term strategy contain a wealth of information and a range of important findings that should inform Parties' deliberations on technology development and transfer under the AWG-LCA. We are pleased that the Subsidiary Bodies during this session agreed to invite the AWG-LCA to consider the information contained in these reports. We look forward to seeing the recommendations by the EGTT in these reports included in the negotiation text for the August meetings.

Madam Chair,

The G-77 & China notes the report on progress made in implementing activities under the Nairobi Work Programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change.  We are pleased to see the release of a "call for action" emanating from this process. The Group looks forward for more party-driven and action-oriented outcomes of the Nairobi Work Programme that contribute to improving the developing countries' ability to undertake practical adaptation actions.

Madam Chair,

G-77 & China would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the support and information provided by the World Meteorological Observation, Global Climate Observing System, Global Terrestrial Observing System and Committee on Earth Observation Satellites and call on them to continue their engagement with our regions. These observations are vital for climate change attribution and detection, assessing the impacts of climate variability and change, accessing and utilising satellite imagery data, as well as supporting research toward improved understanding, modelling and prediction of the climate system.

We would also like to commend the regional and international climate change research programmes and organizations and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for the updated information on new scientific findings and developments relevant to the needs of the Convention. However, enhanced research activities are still needed in the developing countries, especially those identified as part of the Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change.

Madam Chair,

The G-77 & China appreciates the advances achieved at this meeting on the work by SBSTA in relation to agenda item 5, reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, which will facilitate the ongoing work by the AWG-LCA.

Madam Chair,

The Group reiterates its commitment to continue to support and engage constructively in all the discussions under the SBSTA in future sessions.

I thank you.
