Towards a Global Pact for the Environment

INTERVENTION ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA BY THE PERMANENT MISSION OF EGYPT TO THE UNITED NATIONS, DURING THE ORGANIZATIONAL SESSION OF THE AD HOC OPEN-ENDED WORKING GROUP ON "TOWARDS A GLOBAL PACT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT", ESTABLISHED BY GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION 72/277 - ITEM 5: INFORMATION ON DOCUMENTS TO BE CONSIDERED BY THE SUBSTANTIVE SESSIONS (New York, 7 September 2018)

Co-Chairs,

1- On behalf of the Group of the 77 and China, we would like to thank the Secretariat on the information provided on the status of the documentation concerning the SG report. We seize this opportunity to stress upon the importance of the timely submission of the SG report. In this regard, the Group stresses the importance of the SG report to include inputs and, seek views of the Member States and relevant UN agencies, while maintaining impartiality and the technical and evidence-based nature of the report.

2- In our views, it would be also helpful if a draft version of the SG report could be shared before handed with the Member States to allow more time for its examination.

3- In accordance with Op (5) of the GA resolution 72/227 the organizational session is mandated to examine the organizational matter of the substantive session. As such, no substantive discussion related to this agenda item can take place at the organizational session.
