Statement delivered by H. E. Ambassador Mr Mahmoud Elamin, PR of Sudan, Chairman of the Group of 77 Vienna Chapter to the LDCs Ministerial Conference, 30 November - 1st December, 2013 - Lima, Peru
Honourable Ministers, Excellencies, Distinguished participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
1. The Group of 77 and China highly appreciates UNIDO's initiative on organising this 5th LDC Ministerial Conference and expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Peru for arrangements to host this Conference.
2. The hosting of this Conference by a G77 country gives us inspiration and confidence on expanding the possibilities to leverage the experiences available among the Group's Members.
The Group believes that the most effective way towards achieving inclusive and sustainable development in the LDCs is by harnessing the SMEs development, productive capacity building, trade and employment through public private partnerships, among other mechanisms.
The Group of 77 and China further calls on UNIDO to continue its efforts towards improving the livelihoods of women and youth in LDCs. The Group is of the view that the greater burden of poverty is borne by the women and empowering them would drive social and economic growth. The Group also believes that youth employment is an essential component towards sustainable development.
3. The Group encourages UNIDO to effectively implement the UNIDO LDC Operational Strategy 2012-2020 including the mobilization of adequate financial resources and appeals to the international community to contribute for the comprehensive and timely implementation of this Strategy. While recognizing that the North- South cooperation remains the core of global development partnership, the Group encourages UNIDO also to strengthen its ongoing initiatives on South-South, triangular cooperation, in order to ensure efficient use of resources when implementing the UNIDO LDC Operational Strategy 2012-2020.
4. The Group of 77 and China looks forward to fruitful and rewarding discussions and exchange of views in the days ahead.
