Results of PGTF - Project INT/20/K16

INT/20/K16-Bioactive molecules applied to sugarcane and microorganisms associated to its cultivation

Submitter: Sugarcane Research Institute (Instituto de Investigaciones de la Caña de Azúcar - INICA), based in Havana, Cuba
Subcontractor: Same as above.
Priority area: Food and agriculture
Participating/beneficiary countries: 3 countries (Argentina, Cuba, and Mexico)
PGTF input: US$ 20,000
Other inputs: US$ 45,000 (estimated)
Number: INT/20/K16
Duration: Two (2) years
Approval: 43rd Annual Ministerial Meeting of the Group of 77 (New York, 27 September 2019)
Completion: Final report submitted on 22 May 2025
Impact: The project was a successful collaboration among Cuba, Argentina, and Mexico aimed at improving how sugarcane plants are grown in laboratories. Scientists tested natural plant-based substances called brassinosteroids, which helped sugarcane plants grow faster, stronger, and with better root systems. These improvements made the plants more adaptable to real-world conditions and reduced the time and cost needed to prepare them for planting. The project also showed that using these natural products could reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, helping to protect the environment. With these promising results, the project offers a practical and sustainable solution to strengthen the sugarcane sector in Latin America and could benefit farmers, producers, and rural economies throughout the region.
