STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA BY MR. WALEED ALSHAHARI, PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF YEMEN TO THE UNITED NATIONS, ON AGENDA ITEM 146, ADMINISTRATIVE AND BUDGETARY ASPECTS OF THE FINANCING OF THE UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS: CLOSED PEACEEPING MISSIONS, AT THE SECOND PART OF THE RESUMED SIXTY-FOURTH SESSION OF THE FIFTH COMMITTEE OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY (New York, 3 May 2010)

Mr. Chairman,

1. I have the honour to speak under this item on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

2. The Group would like to express full support to returning US Dollars 291,000 to the Government of Kuwait, reflecting two thirds of the adjusted net credits available in the account of the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission, in line with the decision 63/557 taken by the General Assembly in its 63rd Session.

3 The Group firmly believes that the issue of returning the money to the Government of Kuwait should be resolved swiftly and separated from the overall discussion on closed peacekeeping missions.

4. Accordingly, the Group is tabling a draft decision in this regard, and looks forward to its adoption by the Fifth Committee as soon as possible.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
