INTERVENTION ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA BY MR. ADEL ALSHEIKH, PERMANENT MISSION OF YEMEN TO THE UNITED NATIONS, ON AGENDA ITEM 5 (ISSUES THAT COULD BENEFIT FROM ATTENTION IN FUTURE WORK OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON OCEAN AFFAIRS AND THE LAW OF THE SEA) AT THE ELEVENTH MEETING OF THE UNITED NATIONS OPEN-ENDED INFORMAL CONSULTATIVE PROCESS ON OCEANS AND THE LAW OF THE SEA (New York, 24 June 2010)

Mr. Co-Chair,

1. I have the honour to speak on behalf of the Group of 77 and China on agenda item 5.

2. The Group thanks the Co-Chairpersons for the comprehensive composite streamlined list of issues, that could benefit from attention in future work of the General Assembly on Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, presented during this Eleventh Meeting.

3. The G77 and China is of the view that the item "Examination of progress in the implementation of the oceans chapter of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD)" (A/58/95, para. 132, "f"), under "Implementation of international instruments", would constitute a valuable contribution for the process to be undertaken in the context of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) in 2012, also referred to as 'Rio+20', especially in view of the fact that one of its objectives is to assess the progress and implementation gaps in meeting already agreed commitments.

        I thank you.
