STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF THE GROUP OF 77 AND CHINA BY H.E. AMBASSADOR ABDULLA M. ALSAIDI, HEAD OF DELEGATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF YEMEN, AT THE CLOSING SESSION OF THE SUBSIDIARY BODY FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVICE (SBSTA 33) (Cancun, Mexico, 4 December 2010)

Mr. Chairman,

1. I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Group of 77 and China.

2. The Group of 77 and China acknowledges the importance of the Nairobi Work Programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change and activities conducted during phase one of the programme; however, the group is keen to be engaged in the review of the programme effectiveness.

3. The Group 77 and China recognized that progress has been made in the consultation process at this session which will facilitate the ongoing work by the AWG-LCA.

Mr. Chairman,

4. The Group urges international organizations to harmonize actions to avoid duplication of efforts and waste of resources. Furthermore, we look forward to greater country-driven interaction between Parties and relevant organizations. We would also like to highlight the importance of the programme as one source of germane knowledge that should feed the ongoing work on adaptation under the AWG-LCA.

5. The Group of 77 and China is of the conviction that a second commitment period by Annex 1 parties is a must for reduction of GHG emissions to reach ambitious targets based on science prior to whatever consideration on their mechanisms or operational aspects under the agenda items of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice.

Mr. Chairman,

6. The Group of 77 and China reiterates its commitment to continue to be engaged in all discussions under the SBSTA in future sessions.

I thank you.
