G- 77 turnover of chairmanship
from Morocco to Qatar

New York , 16 January 2004 – The Chairmanship of the Group of 77 was formally handed over from the Kingdom of Morocco to the State of Qatar today. His Excellency Mr. Ahmad bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and member of the Cabinet of the State of Qatar, made his inaugural address at UN Headquarters in New York. The ceremony was opened by His Excellency Mr. Taïb Fassi-Fihri, Minister-delegate of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Morocco, who delivered a farewell address as outgong Chairman of the Group of 77 for 2003. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, and the Administrator of UNDP, Mr. Mark Malloch Brown, also addressed the turnover ceremony.

Message to the Special Ession of the General Assembly on Children

       The Group of 77 and China welcomes the convening of the Special Session of the General Assembly on the Ten-year review of the implementation of the Programme of Action of the World Summit for Children, which will be held at United Nations Headquarters, in New York, 8-10 May 2002, and express their commitment to achieving a successful outcome.
     
  The Member States of the Group of 77 and China will participate fully in the Special Session with a view to improving the lives of children throughout the world, particularly in developing countries.
       
The international community should seize this unique opportunity to reaffirm once again its commitment to improve the situation of all children and to make another urgent appeal to give every child a better future. The Member States of the Group of 77 and China are committed to make the Special Session a rounding success.

The Tehran Consensus concludes momentous gathering of developing nations. G-77 members to consolidate the South-South cooperation platform

IFCC-XTehran, 23 August 2001 – A historic gathering of over 100 delegations from G-77 governments, agencies of the United Nations and institutions of the South, who had come together to discuss practical ways to strengthen the economic independence of the developing countries in a fast globalizing economy, concluded Monday in Tehran with the adoption by acclamation of the Tehran Consensus. UNITED NATIONS (20 July 2001) - In order to mark the
37th anniversary of the establishment of the Group of Seventy-Seven (G-77) and on the eve of the tenth session of the IFCC to be held in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran from 18
to 23 August 2001, the Office of the Chairman of the G-77 announced today that the process of construction of its new web site has been successfully completed. This new web site www.g77.org, reflects a number of major enhancements, with a view to responding to the increasing daily needs of member states and the general public. The new site also illustrates the expansion of the agenda and activities of the G-77, as well as the increasing demand for information from various institutions, particularly in the developing world.

G-77 Calls for Real Negotiations on Kyoto

UNITED NATIONS (10 July 2001) - With the climate
change negotiations on the Kyoto protocol to resume in Bonn, Germany, in less the a week, the Chairman of the Group of 77 (G-77) emphasized the readiness of the developing world to engage in real, substantive negotiations with all other partners. Ambassador Bagher Asadi (Islamic Republic of Iran), Chairman of the
Group, reiterated today that the developing countries go to Bonn ready to engage in a two-week long intensive parley expected to complete the work left unfinished in the Hague last November.

G-77 Calls for More Aid for Aids

UNITED NATIONS (25 June, 2001) - As the Special Session on
HIV/AIDS began today at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Group of Seventy-Seven (G-77) called on the developed nations of the world to increase their contributions to the global HIV/AIDS fund and to forgive the debt
of poor nations to help combat the deadly virus. Ambassador Bagher Asadi (Islamic Republic of Iran), Chairman of the G-77, said that the contributions to the global fund had been too few and too little. The Chairman also noted the interdependence between debt relief and nations having the financial resources to fight the virus.

Developing Nations to Meet in Tehran

UNITED NATIONS (15 June, 2001) - Ambassador Bagher Asadi
of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Chairman of the Group of Seventy-Seven (G-77), announced today at the United Nations Headquarters in New York that the Islamic Republic of Iran will host the tenth meeting of the Intergovernmental Follow-
up and Coordination Committee on Economic Cooperation Among Developing Countries (IFCC-X) from 18 to 23 August, 2001 in Tehran. The announcement came during a press conference to mark the 37th anniversary of the G-77. The conference will work toward strengthening the economic independence of the South in a fast globalizing economy.
"The IFCC-X conference represents a significant step forward in strengthening mechanisms through which developing countries can achieve economic progress by engaging in South-South cooperation," remarked Ambassador Asadi. "This conference provides an opportunity for the South to pool our collective knowledge, resources, and potentialities in various fields of cooperation toward the promotion of the well being of all the people of the South."
